Resurrection & History

.....making the case for the New Testament claims about the resurrection of Jesus Christ
March 10 – 11, 2008

A lecture series for the thinking person
Institute for Third Millennium Faith
Partnering with the Department of Religious Studies of Millsaps College

“If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile…we are to be pitied more than all men.” (I Cor. 15:17-19, NIV)

The claim that Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead is the most fundamental claim of the Christian faith.  According to the New Testament, the experience of Christ’s empty tomb and his appearing to them launched the disciples of Jesus into the world. They ceased being fearful and became a force that helped change history.

At the same time, it is the most unbelievable and extravagant claim imaginable.  While other religions have mythic storiaes about dying and rising gods or heroes, only the early Christians have ever claimed that they had seen with their own eyes their founder alive – raised from the dead -- after being executed publicly.

The question that we need to ask in the 21st century is whether or not it is still rationally possible to believe in this event.  Are there any good reasons for believing that Jesus of Nazareth was raised from the dead circa 30 A. D., after being executed as a criminal against the Roman state?

The answer is yes!

On March 10 – 11, 2008. . .

The Institute for Third Millennium Faith will be sponsoring an event that offers a vibrant defense of historic orthodox Christian belief regarding the resurrection of Jesus.  This “Millennium Lectures” series will involve serious discussion among Christians who differ theologically on the issue of how to understand the Gospels’ message.

Our featured speaker for all three sessions will be:

Dr. William Lane Craig, one of the leading apologists for orthodox Christian faith in the world today.   He will make the case historically that the resurrection accounts in the Bible are best understood as testimony to a real event that took place in time and space.
a

Dr Craig is a prolific author.  He is Research Professor of Philosophy, Talbot School of Theology.

Among his many theological and philosophical works are the books:

  • Reasonable Faith
  • Philosophical Foundations of a Christian Worldview
  • Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up

All sessions of this series will be held at the Academic Complex Recital Hall on the campus of Millsaps College.  You may call 601-974-1000 for directions to campus or to the Recital Hall.
